Spring Trend Alert: Eyes on the Brooch.
Brooches dont get the credit they deserve — not as the heirlooms we are so systematically granted from either the forebears we call our own or the ones we assume at vintage shops, or the fancy utilitarian fasteners that they are.
With Prada, Balenciaga, Chanel, and Marni utilizing brooches in their looks for this year's fall preview shows, it's official: Your nana's favourite accessory is super hot right now!

Theres an unspoken inventory of fashion paraphernalia that has become synonymous with women of the 70-plus age bracket—seamed stockings, a sleek hobble skirt, cashmere crewneck sweaters in varying shades of lilac—and, of course, a brooch. So it came as quite the surprise when various iterations of the granny-like pin started cropped up all over the runways.
Take the spring 2015 Cline show for example, where smooth white porcelain hand-shape clasps were fastened through the lapels and cuffs of structured jackets and blazers. Far from appearing fusty, the adornments added artsy irreverence to polished tailoring. Still not convinced? Zoom in on Chanels spring line and you cant help but notice the playful marinire striped cotton and ruby-red enamel butterflies that dance over delicate white lace shirts and classic navy blazers.

Other prize-winning contenders include Oscar de la Rentas elongated black blooms, which looked especially romantic when strewn on the shoulder of a monochromatic gingham crop top or a satin fit-and-flare evening dress. Those wishing to make a bold style statement (or channel Sex and the Citys Carrie Bradshaw circa season two) will be enthralled by the supersize, superchic peony clasps seen at Vera Wang for resort 2015. Worn on the shoulder of an asymmetric chiffon gown or the collar of a sporty satin sweater, the brooch is the cool, versatile piece we cant wait to pin on.
Then, Miuccia Prada, the modernist and avid vintage jewellery collector, accessorized her fall show with floral brooches. Sparkling or solid, they bloomed boutonniere-like from lapels of Easter eggcoloured suits, and from the shoulders of beribboned dresses whose debutante prettiness was refreshingly upended by their brevity.
Seen out of context—say halfway down a tweed coat—and removed from their traditional suited-ladies-who-lunch context, these flower pins looked youthful and playful rather than mumsy. As an old favourite is reborn, we look back at some of the never wilting jewelled flower brooches that have appeared in Vogue.
